Mayo’s town councils could get the ‘snip’

The lengthy and much awaited report by An Bord Snip Nua which was released yesterday outlining a potential saving of €5.3bn has recommended the abolition of town councils and regional authorities, along with reducing the number of county councils from 34 to 22.

Altered Images exhibition at Ballina Arts Centre

Throughout August and September, Ballina Arts Centre will host Altered Images, an exhibition of works from the collections of South Tipperary County Council, Mayo County Council, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition included works by Thomas Brezing, David Creedon, Alice Maher, Caroline McCarthy, and Abigail O’Brien, as well as specially commissioned works by Amanda Coogan and Daphne Wright.

Launch of Culture Night in Mayo

On Thursday September 10 at 7pm Cathaoirleach Cllr John Cribbin will launch Mayo County Council’s Culture Night Brochure. The launch will take place in Mayo County Library and all are welcome to come along. Entertainment on the evening will be provided by Mayo Arts Squad.

Culture Night at Ballina Arts Centre

This year Culture Night will take place on Friday September 25 and Ballina Arts Centre is presenting a programme of events and activities aimed at all ages, with hopefully something for all tastes. The programme includes Shortscreen Cinema, where a number of short films will be shown from 5pm to 6pm and 8pm to 10.30pm. Viewers can drop in and out of the cinema. Many of the films to be screened were made through the Filmbase Shorts scheme. Waiting Room, made by a number of local teenagers during a workshop at Ballina Arts Centre in 2007, will also be screened.

Renowned accordion player for Galway Culture Night

Mary Staunton, renowned button accordion player, has confirmed that she will perform at Mise Art Space, from 6pm to 8pm as part of Galway Culture Night, on Friday September 25.

Ballina-based Minister for Labour Affairs Dara Calleary TD is advising sports clubs and associations in Mayo to nominate members for the National Volunteer Awards.

€1.45m funding prompts clash over art gallery plans
